Steven’s review of Raiders of the Lost Ark

The action/adventure film Indiana Jones and The Raiders of the Lost Ark was released on June 12, 1981. Harrison Ford as Dr. Indiana Jones, an archeologist, is hired by the US government to find the legendary Ark of the Covenant. His main competitor is an arch-rival named Belloq (Paul Freeman) who is working for the Nazis. Jones stops in Nepal to visit his mentor but discovers he has died. His daughter Marion (Karen Allen) inherited a staff insignia that could help uncover the Ark’s location.

The actors were great in this film and the story line was exciting. The film was made with a budget of $18M and has made more than $330M since. The film was rated PG only because at the time there was no PG-13 rating. There were some bloody scenes which weren’t bad. The only scene which might have given some people nightmares was near the end when the Ark was opened. Steven Spielberg did an excellent job of directing for this film. A minor character of note was Toht (Ronald Lacey) the psychotic SS man. His role was done very well and projected the menace underlying the story.

I give this film 5 stars out of 5. At the time of its release, this type of movie was rare. Spielberg obviously had a lot of influences from the films of the 1930s. It truly is a classic

This is a really good movie and a good start to the franchise, Good action and humour and, at the time, very original storyline. Shame the franchise tailed off after Part 3 though.
