Steven’s review of American Psycho

The film American Psycho was released on April 14, 2000. Christian Bale plays Patrick Bateman a banking executive who is obsessed with status and style during the day and at night becomes a psychotic killer. Reese Witherspoon is Evelyn Williams, Bateman’s not so observant fiancee and Jared Leto is Paul Allen, Bateman’s hated rival.

All of the actors did a fine job, but Bale stole the movie with his cold charm and psychotic outbursts. Willem Dafoe was Detective Donald Kimball who is investigating Paul Allen’s disappearance. The director did a good job and there was plenty of tension and dark comedy. In one scene, Bateman is exercising while a video of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is running. The film is rated R for violence, sex, drug use, and language.

The storyline is intense and dark. Whenever a movie tries to present the inner works of a person’s mind, especially a criminal’s, it can be disorientating. I was not bored at any point and so I rate this 5 stars out of 5. Bale’s portrayal was scary and sympathetic at the same time.

I do not know what to say about this film. Since I was little Christian Bale has been my favorite actor (Empire of the Sun) I have watched him grow up in the cinema. So, of course, I will give this 5 stars. I cannot fault the film or Bale’s performance.

I did have questions about the film, but StevenF explained it to me. It is a great film.
