StevenF Review of The Christmas Candle

This British Christmas story was released on November 15, 2013. It takes place in the early 1890s in a small village. A pastor who has suffered a personal loss comes to the village and discovers the people there believe in a Christmas miracle candle. Due to his crisis of faith, he seeks to change the villager’s attitude to their belief.

Hans Matheson is David Richmond the minister with modernistic ideas. Emily Barstow is the local agnostic and delivery person Samantha Banks, who lives with her father and nephew, Charlie (Jude Wright). The only actor I found to be poorly chosen was Susan Boyle as the pastor’s landlady. Ms. Boyle may have won on Britain’s Got Talent for her singing, but she definitely won’t get a BAFTA award for her acting. Two other actors of note in this film are Lesley Manville and Sylvester McCoy (of Doctor Who fame) as the Haddingtons who own the shop where the miracle candle is chosen by an angel.

The CGI was very good as was the story line. It may have been a bit sentimental, but it carried a good message without being preachy. The acting (except the one noted) was very good and believable. I thoroughly enjoyed the film and not only would I watch again, I would highly recommend it to others. It was a good family movie which did not have one mention of that mythological man in the red suit. I give this 4 stars out of 5.

By all means, this is a Christian based movie. Unlike other Christian movies, the actual prayers were to the one true God. Then again they spoke about many miracles that Christ says he did not do. I believe in One God, the creator of all things. I do not believe in anything else, so this movie confuses me. I will leave it at that. I think Susan Boyle did an excellent job for the part she played. I think the story was heartfelt and at the end we see a struggling town come back to life. Not thru miracles, but from caring about our neighbors.
