StevenF Review of The Box

The film The Box was released on November 6, 2009. It stars Cameron Diaz and James Marsden as a couple who are presented with a box and a proposition by Arlington Steward (Frank Langella): push the button on the box and get $1 million cash but a stranger dies, or ignore the button and get nothing.

The film is based on a story by science fiction writer Richard Matheson. The box is a test to see if humans ( yes there is an alien element implied in this) give in to their baser urges. I really can’t find too much in the film to criticize. The acting, directing, photography, and story line were very well done. There was no foul language, which was refreshing. The vagueness about Arlington Steward’s employers was frustrating and I was hoping they would be revealed. On the other hand, the director probably did it like this to keep the audience in suspense.

I would tend to consider this as a suspense movie instead of a science fiction one. Some of the story line was a bit unfinished. There weren’t many scenes like this, so they didn’t present a major problem. I give this 4.5 stars out of 5.
