I realize that there are some people who either love Tim Burton’s movies or hate them. Why that is, I suspect, is he takes you to weird and strange places. I, for one, like some of his work and dislike others. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is one that falls into my Like category. While watching it, I almost forgot that Tim Burton had directed it, because it wasn’t as extreme as his version of Alice in Wonderland and Johnny Depp wasn’t in it. In fact, neither was Burton’s wife Helena Bonham Carter.

Jake (Asa Butterfield) plays the grandson of Abe (Chris O’Dowd) who told Jake stories as a child about a small town where a woman cared for some children with unusual abilities. Jake soon learns that the stories were all true and when his grandfather is killed, Jake promises him that he will go to the town and warn Miss Peregrine of upcoming danger.  There is plenty of adventure in the movie as well as some unusual characters, both good and evil. Samuel L. Jackson plays Mr. Baron, the bad guy.

As far as the evil creatures in the film are concerned, well I must say that young kids (between 7-9 years of age) seem to take them in stride. The CGI used in the film was well done. The makeup artists also did a good job. The funniest character to me was Miller, the invisible boy who liked to go naked.  All of the actors were very good and the story line kept the audience’s attention. I don’t know if this is becoming a “thing” now, but this is the second film that I’ve seen where the audience applauded at the end (the first was Pete’s Dragon). I must also remember to mention that it was in 3-D which made it even better.

With all of these things in mind, I would definitely recommend that everyone go see this movie. I give it 5 stars out of 5.

I saw this movie over the Christmas holiday and enjoyed it very much, but then again I loved his version of Alice in Wonderland.
