Guardians of the Galaxy, vol.2 is just as funny and full of adventure as the original movie. While the first movie was pretty much an introduction to the main characters, this sequel deals with the concept of what and who is a family. At times this concept is overstated, but as far as the interactions between the characters goes, humor is the main ingredient.
Chris Pratt (Peter) and Zoe Saldana (Gamora) have some good lines that foreshadows that they will form a closer, romantic relationship. Drax (Dave Bautista) seems to do a lot of laughing in this film, which can, at times be annoying. Rocket the modified raccoon (“I’m not a raccoon!”), voiced by Bradley Cooper and his charge Baby Groot (Vin Diesel) are the best when it comes to interacting either together or with other characters. The villain of the story is left up to the judgment of the audience. In the first movie, Yondu was one of the villains of the story. Kurt Russell’s appearance as Peter’s long lost father could be an “awww” moment, but as Gamora says in one scene, “something doesn’t feel right”. Sylvester Stallone makes a cameo as the leader of the 100 tribes of the Ravengers.
The special effects were a bit overwhelming, but very effective. Directing was smoother than the last film and the lighting was much better, due to less darker settings. In spite of these positives, I still would only rate this movie with 4 stars. I deduced one star because the whole “family” concept seemed like a weak concept to hang this other-wise action-filled movie on. I mean if they are “Guardians”, wouldn’t that already be implied? I think so.
