StevenF Review of Eight Legged Freaks

If you don’t like spiders or refused to watch Arachnaphobia, then Eight Legged Freaks is not for you even though I consider it a comedy. It was released on July 17, 2002, which may make it sound ancient to some people, but it has an excellent cast. A small Arizona town becomes infested by spiders which have mutated due to chemical waste.

David Arquette is Chris McCormick, the son of a gold mine owner who returns to town after ten years. Kari Wuhrer is local sheriff Samantha Parker with two children, a daughter Ashley (Scarlett Johansson) and Mike (Scott Terra). There are all good actors and very believable as their characters. As for the minor players, Doug E. Doug is great as a conspiracy theorist radio host. The CGI of the spiders was above par. The only thing I’m not sure I cared for was the cartoon-like vocalizations given to the mutated spider, i.e. one is dragged behind a car and you hear it go “ouch! ouch!” The direction and pacing was excellent and the humor, while subtle in some scenes, was perfect.

I totally enjoyed this movie and David Arquette is one of my favorite actors. I would definitely recommend this film to others, I would watch it again, and I will buy it for my collection. The feel of the movie makes me think of Evolution with David Duchovny. I give this 5 stars out of 5 for the pure entertainment of the film rather than the technical aspects.

Don’t you just love it when actors get eaten on camera… well after all they are just acting and the spiders have to have someplace to lay their eggs… over half the town has baby spiders in them. There were a couple of logic flaws in this, but I really enjoyed it. 5 stars!

I don’t like spider but I want to watch this one…I think 😉
This was fun, kinda cheesy in parts but fun. There was humour throughout, which increased my enjoyment, and the noises the spiders made when being killed was hilarious. 🙂
