The Shape of Water, (Dec 22, 2017) When I first saw the trailer for this movie I was disappointed. Luckily I actually see a movie before I review it. I must say that the academy awards voters had to be mostly women for this to win the Oscar, not that it was bad, but it was a Romeo and Juliet movie with basically the same action. So what was the difference? The time period for one, this takes place, and I am guessing around 1960 based on the vehicles and clothing worn.
Unnecessary nudity, but the acting was well performed by most cast members. The fish and the girl fall in love, and in an incredible ending, both are shot by a secret service guy. Very bloody. Foul language abounds but it did not detract from the movie, thankfully. There are several macabre scenes, which is probably why a few of the men at the academy voted for it, men sure don’t give a love story a vote, well okay that is my opinion.
So I have to say this is a quasi-action adventure story with an Indiana Jones love fest. Yes, right in the middle of the movie. You have Russians of course, bad Americans of course, and little everyday people with good hearts to round it all out. I have to tell you though, that common sense was not a factor in the movie in several scenes. This was written by a woman and the entire movie reeks of it. I am sure the director del Toro added things to make it interesting for guys. After all, even Romeo and Juliet would have been boring without the action.
I did enjoy the movie and give it 4 out of 5 stars, watch it you will like it, but I will not be adding it to my collection. It is not a movie you want to watch over and over, well unless you are a girl, after all, it is a girly movie. 🙂
