Paul’s review of Shanghai Fortress

When future mankind finds a new source of energy, Xianteng, on distant planets, they find a way to ‘grow’ the substance back on Earth. Unfortunately, the aliens have decided that they want to harvest the supply and have destroyed cities around the globe in their pursuit. Shanghai Fortress was released on 9th August 2019 and depicts the human race’s last stand against the attacking aliens.

Like most Chinese movies, it is overly long at 107 minutes and could have been cut a little without distracting from the storyline. Saying that though, it was entertaining following not only the main storyline but the story behind the main characters love interests and how they became defenders of the Xianteng. The acting was good, and the subtitles clear throughout. It was weird to hear strange English accents in parts though. When you watch it, I am sure you will find similarities to other alien attack sci-fi movies, but this isn’t a bad thing. Overall 4.5 out of 5, the 0.5 was subtracted purely for the movie’s length.

The Chinese have come up with some interesting science fiction movies lately. This was full of action and some romance. One scene was vaguely similar to Independence Day (I won’t say which scene) but this was a very enjoyable movie. I had no problem with the length of the film.
