Paul’s review of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

This movie, released 20th December 2017 – rated 12A, is a sort-of sequel to the 1995 original starring the late Robin Williams. I say sort-of as it can be watched without knowing anything about the original, which is good as I only have a vague memory of seeing that when I was a kid 😛

The story is about four teenagers who are transported into the video game world of Jumanji. The characters are transformed as they enter the game, and these are played by Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan. The first three are probably well known but Gillan is a Scottish actress who started out playing a companion in the Doctor Who series before moving to Hollywood.

The story is a mixture of action and comedy and the lead actors all contribute to make the story an enjoyable two-hour watch. Jack Black steals the show however, playing a girl inside a male video game character and he his acting really did make me laugh out loud. Some scenes near the end of the end of the jungle sequence were a little silly though and could have been done differently in my opinion.

The effects overall were very good but there were a couple of areas where you could tell CGI had replaced the characters, particularly in Gillans’ scenes, but this could have been deliberate as it was supposed to be a video game?

I know I have criticised the movie in some areas, but they were really minor and the movie is definitely one to add to you collection with an easy 5/5 stars.
