As the son of a Roman General and Statesman, he was destined to become an officer in his father’s army, learn to run the family business, and marry. This was Rome at the beginning of the Republic and right after the last of the kings. It was a deadly time of corruption, traitors, and assassins. This was a time when ten year olds died in battle and when twelve year olds led the troops, a time when twenty to thirty year olds ruled a Republic and those older yet, ruled the senate.

Young Dante couldn’t have foreseen what would happen to him and his childhood friends, but then, it was expected of them. Follow Dante in his journey into manhood in this passionate tale about an unlikely hero, the brutality of war, and survival.

In Legacy Grapes of Rome, Dante, the son of a Roman General, grew up knowing the finer things in life and wanted for nothing. He has few friends but the ones he does have are very close to him, including the boy slaves who love and adore him.
Little did he know that his life would be turned upside down when Etruscan armies decide that they have had enough of the fledgling Roman state. Dante has to grow up quickly and pretty much overnight goes from an innocent little boy into a warrior feared by his enemies but adored by his legions.
Remmy takes us on an adventure you won’t forget. You will laugh, you will cry, but one thing is for sure you won’t want to put this book down as you read every chapter that leads to a finale you certainly will remember.
For those of you worried that a story about war is not suitable for the target audience, be assured there is nothing that you won’t already witness in a suitably rated movie or video game

One Thought on “Catching_Fire Review: What Rome taught us

Remmy Megg’s historical/adventure novel, Grapes of Rome is sure to appeal to any YA reader who can focus on the adventures of the main character of Dante while also learning a bit about history. Catching Fire’s review of this novel is very succinct and, hopefully, draws the reader into learning more about Dante’s adventures. He gives a bare bones account of the story without giving away any spoilers.

Young readers will see history as a setting for characters that they can either relate to or fantasize about becoming. The themes of bravery and loyalty are characteristics which every reader should be able to relate to. Catching Fire did an excellent job of presenting the story behind Grapes of Rome in such a way that it should be on every YA reader’s list and even every adult’s list.
