StevenF Review of The Sunchaser

The film The Sunchaser, Oct 25, 1996 and is rated R.  It stars Woody Harrelson as oncologist Michael Reynolds who is kidnapped by Brandon “Blue” Monroe (Jon Seda) a dying juvenile inmate. Blue is inspired by a book written by a Navaho shaman which  tells of a lake that has healing powers and Blue uses Reynolds to keep him alive until they get to the lake.

This film was directed by Michael Cimino who was responsible for the disasterous Heaven’s Gate. This, on the other hand, was a good film which was helped by an excellent story. All of the actors were excellent as well as the action scenes. There were some scenes with blood but they were not gory. Most of the scenes with blood were due to Blue’s cancer. Anne Bancroft had a cameo role as a New Ager who tells Reynolds that he has to have faith instead of trusting in Western medicine for all of the answers.

I personally had never heard of this movie before, but I thought that they portrayed the struggle between Western medicine and Native American beliefs in a fair and balanced way. The beginning of the movie was a bit slow and the soundtrack was terrible. It reminded me of something that would have been more appropriate in a 1970s B movie.  As good as I felt the story was, I wouldn’t buy this movie. I would watch it again, however. I give it 4 stars out of 5.
