Although not usually a reader of the YA genre, I have to say I found Grapes of Rome: Legacy Volume 1, a thoroughly entertaining and intriguing read. The main protagonist of the story is a young boy named Dante, the son of a Senator in the city of Rome. Dante has a caring and gentle nature, and even treats slaves with courtesy and respect, something that is not done by others. He is a young boy, first and foremost. He enjoys playing and causing mischief, and he loves his parents.
As war and treachery descend upon Rome however, Dante is forced to become a man before is time, as most boys did during these harsh times. Dante must remember the teachings of his Greek tutor in order to survive the brutality of war and demonstrates wisdom beyond his years as tragedy befalls him.
Author Remmy Meggs has created a story showing the unforgiving and dangerous world of Ancient Rome. The characters are well thought out, and have many layers to them, as does the plot. As I read the book, I found myself liking it a little to A Game Of Thrones, in terms of the politically motivated plotting, and the inability to trust even those you would deem to be the closest of friends.
This book will keep you hooked all the way through, and has a great twist at the end. This is must read. 5 stars.
