This movie is based upon Operation Dynamo, where allied troops were rescued from the beaches and harbours of Dunkirk following the Battle of France after they were cut off and surrounded by German troops. It was also remembered as one of the worst military disasters of WWII.

The movie stars Harry Styles of One Direction but I did not know this when I went to watch, and I still don’t know what part he played. This I find to be a good thing. It also stars Kenneth Branagh and Tom Hardy who are the only other names I recognise in the cast.

We are shown the action unfolding from a variety of viewpoints, ranging from actual soldiers to the people on fishing vessels travelling from the UK to rescue them. The action is pretty intense and the two hours seemed to pass by very quickly. However, it took me a while to realise that the differing viewpoints were not actually all happening at the same time and until I realised this I was confused as to why a crashed plane was flying again!

The movie overall is good to watch if you want to pass a few hours and there are also times when you may cry a little. I will not be adding it to my collection though and rate it 2.5 out of 5.

5 Thoughts on “Paul’s review of Dunkirk w/trailer

Even the idea of the movie sounded bad, who wants to remember such a devastating day where the Nazi’s won? Oh yeah the Brits saved a few people, but they don’t say how many died while waiting to evacuate.

I agree it was a time when lots of people died due to bad decisions. The story does show how the UK people did something when the military failed.

A great review. “Hope is a weapon” may be a nice phrase for this historical disaster but back up would have been a better weapon. Granted, the British people were very brave and patriotic by sending every ship available to help with the evacuation, but the British forces shouldn’t have been in that situation in the first place.
If the editing is as scrambled as Paul says, I would have found the film to be irritating, not emotional.

Great review, Pauly. I actually want to see this movie. I’m a bit of a WWII buff so it’ll be a must see for me.

On a funnier note, a girl I worked with had a date this weekend. They went to see a movie. She wanted to see Dunkirk, but her date wanted to see Baby Driver. They settled on Baby Driver. She says that was probably their first and final date. 🙂

We were going to see that movie but I said it looked ‘poop’. The only other one that looked decent was Dunkirk 😉
